Depilation is the removal of the part of the hair above the surface of the skin. The most common forms of depilation are shaving and the use of chemical depilatories.
Epilation is the removal of the entire hair, including the part below the skin. Methods include waxing, plucking sugaring, epilation devices, lasers (for dark hair), threading, intense pulsed light or electrology.
Blond, gray, red and white hair can be removed from dark skin or pale skin. It can be removed temporarily or permanently.
Permanent blond, gray and red hair removal
The easiest hair for lasers to remove permanently is dark hair on pale skin. Laser energy is absorbed by pigment, so it works best when there is a strong contrast between skin and hair colors. It is not effective on blonde, white or gray facial or body hair on pale skin or dark skin. However, it is possible to permanently remove fair hair with other procedures, such as electrolysis, specialized epilatory gels or Intense Pulsed Light. Methods of permanent blond, gray and red hair removal include electrolysis, Depilatory Gels and IPL.
